Clara Chu is a London based womenswear accessories designer. Born and raised in Hong Kong, her work involves a high attention to details, with a flair of vibrant, androgynous and provocative designs. Much of Clara's work exploit the concept of the hand crafted and the incorporation of innovative technology. Through visionary and colourful pop accessories, she re-imagines and re-creates textures of the edible by re-appropriating and transforming mundane kitchenware.
CHEW BY CHU’s latest collection was developed from Chu’s eagerness to transform the everyday object commonly known as Tupperware. Technical processes include 3D printing, silicone and resin castings. She also utilised existing household objects in parts of the accessories such as water bottles, ice-cube trays and rubber jar openers etc. They were engineered into functional fittings that work like bag fittings, locks, gadgets and hinges. These technological processes and up-cycling of materials in contrast with traditional leather bag-making techniques presents something oddly beautiful, playful and humorous.
